![]() | POPULAR SCIENCE CALLS RIPXX® ‘A BLACK BOX FOR HOTDOGGERS’New gadget for skiers and snowboarders begins shipping this week December 16, 2009 SPRING HILL, Tenn., Dec. 00, 2009 – People looking for the perfect gift for skiers and snowboarders this Christmas should look no further than the January 2010 issue of Popular Science magazine, which features the Ripxx Personal Measurement Device. The magazine’s “What’s New” section has an article about this new gadget, which was dubbed “A black box for hotdoggers.” “The U.S. Bobsledding team is using a version of the Ripxx to train for the Olympics,” the article states. “[Ripxx] comes with detailed maps of popular ski and snowboard resorts so when wearers download data from a run, it draws their avatar into an exact replica of a trail, letting them pinpoint with unprecedented accuracy why a jump failed or succeeded.” The Ripxx is a small device that contains a suite of sensors that tracks the movements an athlete makes on the slopes, half pipe, trail or track. The combination of a GPS sensor, three gyroscopes and three accelerometers means the Ripxx can detect and record location, orientation, speed, acceleration, vertical height and just about any other move the athlete makes. “We have been rocking and rolling trying to get these devices ready in time for Christmas,” said Kurt Nichol, president of Experimental Design & Analysis Solutions Inc. (EDAS) makers of Ripxx. “We know several Olympic athletes that hope to get one in their stockings this year.” In addition to the U.S. Bobsledding team, Nichol has been working with the U.S. Skeleton and Luge teams, helping them interpret the Ripxx data as part of their training.
